In 1891, Japanese artisans began marking their pieces with the word Nippon to comply with the McKinley Tariff Act, which required all porcelain to bear the name of the country that produced it. Nippon is a direct translation of Japan. In 1921 the United States government changed its position and required that Japanese imports no longer be marked "Nippon", but with "Japan".
